As a professional resume writer, I see these same mistakes over and over and over. Jobseekers need to SHOW what they can do, not bore them into coma while reaching for the trash can! Demonstrate those skills and achievements! Give numbers and metrics (especially if you are in a sales related industry)!

I love it when I have a client who wants a creative resume, but depending on the position and industry its not always a good idea. Most of the time, you can have fun with your name, and even colors to a certain extent (whatever you do stay away from red text colors and make sure your font is readable)! Depending on your career, you can incorporate classy graphics.

Hey J.

I think any skill can be turned into a star-worthy skill, if it's directly related to what they are looking for.

Start by making a list of 5-10 of your top skills/values/qualities. Then make a list of 5-10 skills/values/qualities that you know (not think, know) they want, for the particular position you're applying, in the particular agency/firm you're applying to.

Go over the two lists and figure out which skills/values/qualities can potentially match, as is, or with a little bit of rewording.

Example: Instead of writing "Great communication skills," write: "Blogger with over 400 subscribers / Twitter followers"

If you email me or post (here) your lists, I'll be happy to assist more.

cheers,
a.

Your article forced me to meditate on my own brand, and let's just say I'm going through a major rebranding effort today. I'm curious, however, as to your proposed "skills" section. I'm a copywriter, and for the life of me can't figure out any "star" worthy qualities that would provide proof of my abilities. Can you provide examples that aren't software based so that I can maybe understand better what belongs in this section?

Thanks,
J.

Muaythai

That's the problem with posting on those sites. There is no way for an employer to build their own brand relative to the talent community - and make themselves attractive to the BEST talent.

Ogilvy said it best, "The Agency with the Best People Wins."

And that is true in any economy.

It was true when he wrote it circa 1959, it's still true now.

Right on the mark! Now tell us how to write the ultimate cover letter- harder than it seems.

To whom it may concern: I don't know who you are as you didn't identify the name of your company in your Craigslist/Krop/creativehotlist ad, but I'm confident I'm the best candidate for whatever it is you need...um, what's this job for again? Anyway, please don't lose me in your soon-to-be-full inbox- I really am a good designer. And anything else you want me to be...

Great article, and very helpful. As someone who has interviewed more than 10,000 creatives in the past 14 years, your article makes one point very strongly.

You CANNOT bore someone into interviewing you.

Instead, engage, inspire, connect - TELL YOUR STORY.

The only person who can tell your story - is you.

Anything that makes you different from everyone else IS your competitive advantage.

Make sure that advantage stands out front and centre, and comes through LOUD and CLEAR.

Well done!
