According to The Nielsen Company survey released Jan 20, the majority of Super Bowl viewers enjoy the game’s ads more than the action on the field. The survey also reveals that Super Bowl ads are most effective and better remembered if they are aired early rather than later in the game. Other interesting findings were:

Super Bowl 2010 (44) XLIV

* Traffic to advertiser Web sites spiked on the day after last year’s Super Bowl (duh)
* In the last five years, the biggest Super Bowl advertiser was Anheuser-Busch, which spent over $100 million on its Bud and Bud Light brands alone.
* Motion Pictures form the biggest category of ad spending, which leads to an immediate surge in online buzz for the advertised films.

According to TNS Media Intelligence, the economic slump have also taken a toll on Super Bowl ads, pushing down the price for only the second time in the game’s history (though they are still the most expensive ads on television).

This year, a 30-second spot is expected to cost anywhere between 2.5M to 2.8M (not including the production costs, just air-time). Final figures will be released after the Super Bowl airs Feb. 7. In the past, an average 30-second ad cost:

2009 -- $3 million
2008 -- $2.7 million
2007 -- $2.4 million
2006 -- $2.5 million
2005 -- $2.4 million
2004 -- $2.3 million

A couple of interesting trends in this 44th Super Bowl:

* Pepsi won’t advertise its drinks for the first time in 23 seasons, joining FedEx and GM, who dropped out last year.
* In their absence, newcomers and smaller companies have snatched up slots in advertising’s biggest showcase.
* From 1990 through 2009, the Super Bowl generated $2.17 billion of network sales, including 1,400 commercials from 210 advertisers (source: TNS)
